Case Study: Cultural Anchors

Cultural Anchors – planning process secured subsidised culture spaces

Whilst much cultural activity has moved into the public realm, especially since the 2012 Olympics, Enable works closely with Wandsworth Council’s Planning Team to ensure that physical arts and culture provision is also recognised as important local community infrastructure. New spaces are being secured through planning agreement with significant rental/lease subsidy. This is creating opportunities for charitable cultural organisations to relocate and to develop fundraising strategies to support their moves into sustainable long term homes.

In Wandsworth Town, the proposed relocation of the Royal Academy of Dance into a new Battersea home and in Wandsworth Town the provision of a new bespoke brewery heritage space are in development through planning negotiation. In future this and other new provision will enhance the borough’s creative reputation and strengthen local cultural life for all.

All organisations are expected to contribute to the daily cultural life of the area; specifically to provide educational engagement for local young people, offer local access to space (e.g. for performance or rehearsal) or cultural activity.
