Selected highlights from our cultural programme
A highlight of the arts festival from 2009 to 2013, The Shimmy invited audiences to take a stroll along the river from Putney Bridge through to Wandsworth Park and enjoy unusual arts encounters in the different spaces along the way.
The Shimmy drew on the burgeoning British outdoor arts sector in the run-up to 2012 and the cultural Olympiad. The best of its artists and approaches were brought to the borough for the first time, raising the bar of what was possible, creating new appetite and helping to put Wandsworth on the map as a cultural destination.
Partnering with Wandsworth Youth Services, we ran a competition showcase of performances in all genres. Contestants were chosen at auditions held across the borough. They received professional feedback and direction, practised with a backing band and had vocal and/or performance coaching in the run-up to the showcase.
This upbeat and full-house event was delivered by an independent producer and included a live backing band, guest performances and compere. Prizes were presented by the Wandsworth mayor.
The project also included development opportunities for other young people in event promotion and production, e.g. marketing, stage management, artists’ liaison.
A long standing annual photographic competition which included prizes across three sections: Wandsworth in View, Snapshot, and Schools groups.
Winning entries were selected by industry professionals, with prizes awarded at the launch of an exhibition that went on to tour borough libraries and other venues.
