Enable hosts Inclusive Sport Festival in Wandsworth
This August, Enable hosted an Inclusive Sport Festival in partnership with Disability Sports Coach and Wandsworth Council at Shillington Gardens and George Shearing Centre. Open to all ages, the festival showcased what the borough has to offer for inclusive sport.
In collaboration with partners, Fulham Football Club Foundation, Carneys Community, Netball Coach UK, Flyerz Hockey, Surrey Cricket and AFL Europe, the team saw 42 people come along across the two days and enjoy a variety of different sports and physical activities, including football, boxing, netball, and Aussie Rules Football.
All activities were well received, with Aussie Rules Football being a particular highlight for some. One participant of the festival said, “I really enjoyed all the sports but loved the Aussie Rules Football best”.
The free festival demonstrated the opportunities for disabled people in the borough to get active. This encouraged people of all abilities to try something new, develop new skills and make friends, with one parent explaining how “it was great to see everyone engaged and enjoying the sports on offer.”
Kaity Hall, the event’s organiser at Enable, said “These festivals are a great opportunity to bring different people, ages, groups and clubs from the borough together to try some of the amazing sports we have on offer in Wandsworth. We love to put on these types of events, they support the growth of inclusive sport and physical activities as well as offer opportunities for the participants to make new friends and try new activities.”
A big thank you to staff at George Shearing Centre for their continued support, and to all the coaches, volunteers and Disability Sports Coach staff who helped host a fantastic and inclusive community event.
