GOLD RUSH AT THE LONDON YOUTH GAMES

Wandsworth’s youngsters have run, kicked, netted, parried and hit the bullseye on their way to success at Europe’s largest youth sports competition.

They won the Inner London Trophy, awarded to the inner London borough with the highest score across all disciplines, came third overall out of 32 boroughs, and claimed gold in male and female volleyball, archery and male para football.

Ladies Hockey Team winning bronze

They also took silver in male and female cross country, female squash and male table tennis and bronze in female para football, junior fencing and male and female hockey.

“It has been fantastic to see all the Wandsworth teams competing in the 2019 games and there have been so many great achievements throughout,” said Natalie Pope, Wandsworth’s team organiser. “To get a 3rd place finish overall was a great reflection of all the hard work, dedication and team spirit put in from those involved and I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all the coaches, parents, schools and clubs for their time and efforts this year.”

The events took place across a number of months and culminated in a prestigious finals event at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre over the weekend of July 6th and 7th. Thousands of participants were involved in the competition and more than 500 athletes from Wandsworth were involved in this year’s event through trials, training and competitions.

“Having attended the finals weekend I saw for myself the passion, enthusiasm and sheer talent of the Wandsworth athletes,” said Cllr Steffi Sutters the council’s cabinet member for community services and open spaces “There were fabulous individual performances but the way the whole team has worked together to become the top inner London borough and achieve third place overall is inspiring. It’s a great tribute to our sports clubs, coaches, schemes and training programmes.”

Youngsters will be able to try out many of these activities as four days of free sporting events are coming soon as the Battersea Summer Scheme’s Sport in the Park initiative returns for another year. From Tuesday, July 30th to Friday, August 2nd action-packed days will take place at Battersea Park’s Millennium Arena between 11.30am to 4.30pm.

These are just some of the range of activities for youngsters in our parks over the summer holidays and is all part of our five-month celebration of Wandsworth’s great green spaces under the #LoveParksWandsworth banner. More than 250 park-related events will be taking place until the end of September as people are encouraged to get out and enjoy our parks and open spaces.
