Learning Disabilities Weight Management Service

Empowering adults with learning disabilities in Bexley, Bromley and the Royal Borough of Greenwich, to lead healthier lives through sustainable lifestyle changes. Through a combination of physical activity, nutritional advice, and behaviour change, this multi-week programme aims to reduce health inequalities, promote healthier lifestyles, and offer a supportive, accessible, and inclusive environment.

Funded by the South East London Integrated Care System (ICS), this programme is for adults with learning disabilities to make positive and sustainable changes to their diet and lifestyle. Recognising that people with learning disabilities face additional barriers to maintaining a healthy weight, the service answers a need to provide tailored, evidence-based interventions, including nutrition education, physical activity sessions, and behaviour change support. The programme also engages carers to ensure long-term sustainable outcomes for participants.

How It Works

As a Tier 2 weight management programme, this initiative focuses on long-term, achievable lifestyle changes. Participants will receive tailored support to:

  • Achieve and maintain a healthier weight
  • Improve understanding of nutrition and healthier eating habits
  • Increase physical activity in a way that suits their abilities and preferences
  • Access ongoing support in a welcoming community setting

Why It’s Important

Adults with learning disabilities are at significantly higher risk of obesity, which can lead to various health and social challenges. Research highlights the need for targeted interventions. Recognising these challenges, the programme has been commissioned by local authorities to provide essential support.
