Love Parks Week
Once again it’s time to show some park love in a celebration of the wonderful green spaces of Wandsworth.
Running from July 12 to July 21 Love Parks Week is a nationwide celebration and the perfect opportunity to enjoy your favourite park, or perhaps explore new ones. It’s all part of Wandsworth Council’s six-month celebration of the borough’s great parks under the #LoveParksWandsworth banner.
Wandsworth Council can proudly claim to be one of London’s greenest boroughs with 32 public parks, and by using and celebrating them we are also protecting our green spaces for future generations.
“Over the past few years the council has invested thousands of pounds in our parks,” said Cllr Steffi Sutters, the council’s cabinet member for community services and open spaces. “And until September we have organised more than 250 park-related events.
“We want to encourage residents to get out and make the most of our fabulous green spaces, but I would ask people be responsible, think of other park users and dispose of their rubbish properly.”
To mark Love Parks Week the council has organised more than 20 events over eight days. The programme starts on July 12 with a free walk around Wandle Park. Just meet at the Tooting Hub (BWW Mind) in Tooting High Street at 10am. Over the next week you can then enjoy many more free walks including: Tooting Common on July 13th at 8am and 10am (meet at Tooting Bec Underground Station), Wandsworth Common on July 16th at 11.15am (meet at the Naturescope Centre on Wandsworth Common), and Battersea Park on July 17th at 11am (meet at the Sun Gate).
Other highlights include film screenings of Green Book on July 16th and Pretty Woman on July 17th in Wandsworth Park (www.thelunacinema.com/wandsworth-park), and outdoor gym sessions taking place at various dates in York Gardens, Battersea Park and Shillington Gardens.
And besides these organised events, community groups and our terrific Friends of parks groups are being encouraged to host their own activities. Last Saturday the Friends of Coronation Gardens hosted a Love Parks Picnic, borrowing our giant pink ‘Love Parks Wandsworth’ letters to create an Instagram hit! If you would like to request them at your event then email: firstname.lastname@example.org Please note it must take place in Wandsworth and be an open access, free community event.
Once again Love Parks Week is being hosted by Love Parks/Keep Britain Tidy and visitors to the parks are urged to show the love by not leaving rubbish behind and using a bin bag to take waste home to dispose and recycle it if you are having a picnic. Barbecues are not allowed in any of the parks due to the damages they cause to the grass.
