Courses for Adults

Drawing and Sketching Animals

Tutor: Tim Pond

Artist, illustrator and author of ‘The Field Guide to Drawing & Sketching Animals’, Tim Pond’s lively and engaging class fuses science with art, providing you with the skills, techniques and knowledge you need to create sketches of animals filled with life and movement.

The course will cover a broad range of techniques including quick, gestural sketches as well as linear and tonal studies, in a variety of media – pencil, pen and ink and watercolour.
Tim Pond’s considerable expertise in observing and capturing the natural world in his drawings is reflected in every page of his book. The three day course will also include an opportunity to experience sketching from live owls in the studio. Suitable for artists of all abilities, as well as professional illustrators and animators.

Watercolour Figure Drawing (All Levels)

Tutor:  Adriana Swierszczek
Develop your watercolour skills through exploring the human form. In this course you will be guided on techniques through practical exercises which will enable you to explore and create a series of studies related to the figure and work towards producing more developed watercolour pieces. On this two-day course you will work from the life-model with watercolour.  Suitable for beginners and for those who have previous experience with the medium.

Introduction to Drawing

Tutor: Jane Millar
Covering the basics of drawing from observation, the course aims to explore drawing media in depth; beginning with drawing techniques using pencil and charcoal to explore line, tone and structure then introducing colour and further mark making techniques with pastels.  You will learn the basic principles of observational drawing and be shown how to interpret visual information.

 

Painting – Open Studio

Tutor: Sarah Sparkes
Open studio sessions are available to those that already have experience of working with a painting medium and are interested in progressing their own projects. You will be expected to manage the progress of your own work although advice will be available if required from an experienced tutor. You will be working all day in a large painting studio with specialist lighting.

Creative Collage: Inspired by Still Life (All Levels)

Tutor: Shaun Carey
Expand your existing skills in drawing, painting or illustration through an introduction to the art of collage with reference to still life. Using mixed media and collage, you will learn to create an exciting composition with the emphasis on texture, line, shapes and colour. This course is suitable for beginners wanting to explore their creative potential, or a more experienced artist, designer or illustrator wishing to enhance their own practice.

Botanical Drawing and Painting – Beginners

Tutor: Jaco Nel
For beginners, the course will start with basic principles of drawing using graphite pencils.  It will be the foundation for when we move on to pen and ink and then to watercolour painting. We will cover the botanical world through line, form and shading, examining the basic forms that makes up plants, bulbs, flowers and seed heads.

Etching Taster Course (Hard Ground)

Tutor: Blaze Cyan
This one day intensive course offers an introduction to one of the basic techniques of etching. The course includes plate preparation, laying a hard ground, etching the plate, inking the plate, paper preparation and printing to create images that utilise line and tone which can be printed as black and white images.  Ideally suited for beginners and those wanting to refresh their skills.

Drypoint and Chine Collé

Tutor:  Blaze Cyan
Drypoint is an intaglio print technique which lends itself to expressive drawings and fluid mark making, without the use of acid.  Learn about this method of printmaking by creating your own plates on drypoint plastic, using different mark making techniques. You will also learn how to use a traditional etching press to print your plate and introduce colour or pattern to your finished work using chine collé, to paste coloured tissue or paper into the print.

Etching – Open Studio

Tutor: Blaze Cyan
The Open studio Etching session is available to those that already have experience of etching and printing and are working on developing their own projects. You will be expected to manage the progress of your own work although advice will be available as required from an experienced tutor.

Screenprinting – Open Studio

Tutor: Justine Ellis
Open studio screenprinting sessions are available to those that already have experience of printing and are interested in developing their own projects. You will be expected to manage the progress of your own work although advice will be available as required from an experienced tutor.

Pottery (am or pm) – Open Studio

Tutor: Simon Ashworth
Open studio Pottery sessions are available to those that already have experience of working with clay and are interested in progressing their own projects. You will be expected to manage the progress of your own work although advice will be available as required from an experienced tutor.

Intensive Throwing Day

Carol Greenaway
Only for students with some experience of throwing – it will offer a recap on basic throwing techniques, and then will build on individual throwing skills with a view to completing a range of finished pieces.

Photographing the River Thames

Tutor: Nicholas Cob
This course will allow you to explore and discover London through a daytime photography walk around the River Thames starting from Putney Bridge. The stunning views from this area of London, Putney Bridge crosses the River Thames to Fulham. This part of the river is best known for the starting point of the historic annual Oxford and Cambridge University boat race. During this course, you will learn about the locations and a range of skills and techniques to photograph them effectively.

Family Learning Pottery

Tutor: Belinda Bates
Have fun making and decorating clay pots and figures.  As well as a chance to throw on the wheel. Your work will be fired once, if collected later.  For parent and child aged 7-13 working together.

Kids Pottery Club

Tutor: Belinda Bates
The course is an enjoyable and creative pottery club for children to express themselves through the medium of clay. There will be a themed project and materials are supplied. Your work will be fired once, if collected later.
Age range: 8-13 years not accompanied by an adult.

Family Learning Painting

Tutor: Shaun Carey
Draw and paint under expert guidance. Enjoy both the fun and the challenge of an exciting painting project together. Materials are supplied.
Suitable for children aged 7-13 accompanied by an adult.

Kids Art Club

Tutor: Shaun Carey
The course is an enjoyable and creative art club for children to express themselves through drawing, painting, printing and mixed media. There will be a new project each session and materials are supplied.

The fees for each course are shown in the table. Classes have two fees listed – the standard fee and the discounted fee payable if you are a Wandsworth resident over 60 years of age. There are no discounts available for family learning courses.
