Playgrounds

Parks and playgrounds are open 24 hours a day every week all year round free of charge at the point of use for everyone. So that everybody can use and enjoy their time in public parks certain restrictions apply. Find out some of the things you can do in  parks and playgrounds, and whether you need to get permission first.

There are 31 public parks in the Borough of Wandsworth, many have children’s playgrounds.

  • Many large parks provide good exercise areas for dogs to run.  Please be aware that in some parks or some areas of parks there are restrictions on dogs and dog exercise.  Dog walkers are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs in all the parks.
  • In some parks exercise equipment and outdoor gyms are provided free to use.  Several games areas – for basketball, netball or 5-a-side football – are available free of charge.  In other parks you can book to use the marked sports pitches and there is a cost for this. Most tennis courts are available at a fee.
  • You may enjoy a walk in the park, meeting friends, enjoying the fresh air and nature.  You may enjoy a trip to a park cafe or bring your own picnic but, please, no barbeques anywhere in any of the parks.
  • In some of the large parks Wandsworth Council has let concessions which charge for use of the facilities.

If there is an activity you want to carry out in a green place in Wandsworth which is not covered here, contact us.

All children and young people have the right to play and be included in their local communities.  Our playgrounds provides the best possible play opportunities, attracting children, capturing their imaginations and giving scope to play in new, more exciting and more challenging ways. All of the playgrounds are accessible to children of all abilities and  when we refurbish playgrounds we are adding inclusive equipment that can be enjoyed by children of all abilities.

Each of our playgrounds is  designed to conform to the recommendations BS EN 1176 and 1177 British Standards, in design, manufacture and installation of  equipment and safer surfacing. Each Playground is different and offers playground equipment from a wide range of manufacturers and designs.

We know that children who access play opportunities enjoy a range of significant benefits. Play supports their sense of wellbeing, emotional development, learning and interpersonal skills, health and independence. It is also important in terms of children having fun and enjoying life. Play has been shown to contribute to social development, including social skills such as turn taking  and following rules, empathy, self-regulation, self-confidence, impulse control, and motivation.

Where is your nearest playground?

We have 49 playgrounds (and counting!) across the borough. How many have you been to? Check out the list and visit as many as you can.

Play can help prevent obesity

Research has found that doing 15 minutes a day of moderate exercise (enough to get a child a little out of breath) lowers children’s chances of being obese by almost 50 percent. Play is one of the best ways for children to use up calories, and so increasing the time children spend playing could contribute to reducing obesity.
